Area description
Middle Dalmatia is a popular tourist area of Croatia, with many natural and historic attractions. This coastal area of Croatia is very diverse: its interiors are characterized by rocky hills separated by vigorous rivers and sporadic valleys. Today, villas and houses from this part of Croatia are mostly conceived as countryside properties, many of them were abandoned old properties now refurbished and equipped with modern interior elements. Many more villas are located on the coast line, once upon a time a very important trade route and today an attractive tourist destination. Middle Dalmatia's and Croatia's coastline villas in most of cases are located in secluded bays or on borders of small fishermen villages. Still, each is very well connected to one of four major cities in this area of Croatia: Trogir, Split, Omis and Makarska. Split is currently the economic and administrative center of Dalmatia average, with a population of 200,000.The old settlement of Split is situated on the south side of a small peninsula that penetrates into the Adriatic, about 6 km Salonae Roman settlement, the old capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia.
About this waterfront location, the Roman Emperor Diocletian was built in the s. III took up residence on the bay of Aspalathos and it was here he spent the last years of his life, after being forced to abdicate on May 1 the year 305 AD.After its abandonment, the residence was gradually occupied as a refuge for the population of the continuous invasions arriving by sea. This occupation became final in s. VII of our era, when the old Greco-Roman metropolis Salonae (today Solin) is destroyed and its last inhabitants took refuge within the walls of the ancient palace of Diocletian.
Thus, what was initially a strongly walled Roman residence, went through the course of centuries to emerge as a medieval town within its walls. That is the greatness and originality of Split. This palace is today the heart of the medieval inner city of Split where they have all the most important historical buildings. The importance of Diocletian's palace is notable for its level of preservation and because the buildings have been preserved even overlapping the early Roman buildings without destroying them. Only transforming ... and thanks to the structure of the palace that has reached our days. For this reason, UNESCO declared the whole World Heritage Site in 1979. Villas in Trogir and nearby houses for rent have advantage of being so close to one of most touristically appealing cities of the middle Dalmatia. Since 1997 it is protected as world's cultural heritage by UNESCO, has a perfectly preserved medieval aspect.
Around Split: From Split there are dozens of islands that can easily browse through an extensive network of ferries, hydrofoils and catamarans at a very affordable price. As it is impossible to cover all the islands, it is best to decide on a particular group. The closer the island of Brac , known for its white stone quarries similar to marble and having the best beaches in the country, especially that of Bol, rising from the sea like a golden tongue composed of tiny white stones. It is the most photogenic and is therefore chosen to illustrate the promotional posters of Croatia.
The Cetina River Gorge. A few kilometers south of Split, near the small town of Omis, where it meets the river, a winding road parallel to the river takes us into the gorge formed by it. The shortest path between birth and the walls forming the Dinaric Alps, very close to the coast, the river has made this beautiful gorge has been formed by the force of the water, making its way through the mountains Mosor in its eastern part, with an altitude of 1,330 m. above sea level results in the bend of the river Cetina. Today this area is used for rafting.
