Croatia central coast is a popular tourist area of Croatia, with many natural and historic attractions. During posterior centuries, the residence was gradually occupied as a refuge for the population of the continuous invasions arriving by sea and land. Thus, what was initially a strongly walled Roman residence, went through the course of centuries to emerge as a medieval town within its walls. The importance of Diocletian's palace is notable for its level of preservation and because the buildings have been preserved even overlapping the early Roman buildings without destroying them. For this reason, UNESCO declared the whole World Heritage Site in 1979.
